The traveler as outsider insider: A critical exploration of authorial voice and perspective in Mehta’s and Zaheer’s travelogues
Authors
Vikram Pawar
Abstract
This paper examines the dual position of the traveller as both outsider and insider in Suketu Mehta’s Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found and Noor Zaheer’s The Language of Remembering: Travels through Partitioned India. It explores how authorial voice and narrative perspective shape the representation of space, identity, and cultural encounter. The study argues that both Mehta and Zaheer occupy hybrid positions that allow them to engage critically with the societies they depict while remaining emotionally and historically connected to them. Through comparative analysis, the paper highlights how the outsider insider dynamic produces a nuanced narrative voice that negotiates belonging, memory, and postcolonial subjectivity.
